The first thing you have to do is choose a corporation, pick up to 10 cards and maybe preludes. I find the standard amount of game time for this first turn isn't enough and leaves me feeling rushed. I am relatively new to the game and it takes me a while to figure out all the cards and possible strategies. These choices will determine the flow of the entire rest of the game, so I want to feel I picked wisely.
For the initial selections only, please give players extra time than normal to make their suggestions. The game lasts over 1 hour typically so I don't think an extra minute or two at the beginning will be a problem.• Hvilken browser bruger du?

14. nov 2024 11:44 • I regularly run out of time in real-time games because the very first decision in the game (what initial cards are to be used) is the hardest. I believe, if possible, about 3x - 5x the normal amount of turn time should be available for making this decision.

This is a simple fix that should have been implemented within a second of suggesting it.

16. jan 2025 16:58 • How do you know it's simple? Are you a BGA developer? Time management is probably a central BGA feature that the developers can't mess with as freely as with the implementation of the game.

11. feb 2025 1:12 • I think it's great idea for all players, even these more experienced. I have about 50 finished games on bga and still almost every time first choice is made in a hurry. I could play with ease on high speed but it's impossible due to this choice's limited time. It would be great if it will be possible - mandatory or as an option. I suggest about 5mins on it.

20. feb 2025 7:42 • Please add this feature request. I'm sure some expert players could suggest how long the first turn length should be, but it definitely needs to be increased. Maybe double or triple the amount of a normal turn.

I am adding more time after to compesate for it, but it will only kick in after selection.
3 min should be enought to choose your cards. If not you should play friendly/turn based game.

26. maj 2025 17:49 • Would one way to get around the BGA timer limitation be to give a full turn timer to select corporation, then select prelude, then select starting project cards? That way you effectively get a 3x timer for the opener

The turn timer for real-time Terraforming Mars is very short. Even on the slowest setting, it is only 2 minutes and 42 seconds.
Race for The Galaxy has a 5-minute option on the slowest setting, and that's a game that typically only takes 10 minutes TOTAL for a player to make all moves.

There was a spirited discussion a few months ago about a game analysis in which the OP of the thread had not taken the optimal line with the starting hand. High-level players plan out an opening strategy based on the optimal synergy from among their 2 starting corporations, 4 preludes, and 10 project cards. This takes time. And the advice from top players would be for all players to do this. The given time, even on the slowest setting, does not really provide sufficient thinking time to do this.
I very much like the idea of a button a player can click that says, "please give me extra time", as you suggested. At the start of the game, a player would have one such "time bank", and it would add, let's say, 2 minutes. Or whatever amount is deemed appropriate. And maybe every 25 minutes, one more "time bank'" can be added. Sometimes the doorbell rings, or nature calls, or whatever.
