The BGA game is not applying the penalty for misleading information. Taking another players cards to mislead them is vetoed by the rules but allowed on BGA. The offending player ought to forfeit the round and the impeded player get 7 points. This is described in the official rules on page 8 of the pdf:
"misleading Information: If it becomes apparent that a player has accidently misled another player then a penalty is imposed. The player who gave incorrect information scores zero points for this mini-game while the misled player scores seven points. Points counters should be moved accordingly. As both players have scored then they take no more actions in this mini game." -

See move 28 of the game here: boardgamearena.com/gamereview?table=256309640 This prevented solving the case in move 33 but no penalty is applied and the offending player took all the points, in fact I got penalised for an incorrect guess.

Rapporthistorik
At the very least BGA should prevent players taking cards they know to belong to their opponents when they receive them in their starting hands.
As for the reproach which you make to your opponent to choose a card of your case, it is not based on the rules and in the example which you give on move #28, you did not need this card as the crime of your case could already be deduced from the hints on the boardgame at that time.
Considering the beginning of the referenced game, I think your level of play is much too low for you to enjoy playing P. I. in real time.
Not a bug.
Taking cards that are valuable for your neighbor but not for you is not only not forbidden by the rules, it can actually be part of a strategy.
